Our Family Mission

Joshua 24:15

A mission statement is a few sentences that say who your family is and what you live for. Today you'll write yours together.

1Read it

Joshua led God's people into the land God promised them. Near the end of his life, he gathered everyone together and told them to choose who they would serve. Then he told them what his own family had decided.

“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”Joshua 24:15

2Talk about it

  1. What does it mean for a family to serve the Lord?
  2. What is one thing our family already does that shows we love God?

3Do it

Make a family mission statement.

Fill in the blanks below together. Everyone gets a say. Then copy your mission onto paper and decorate it with markers, crayons, stickers, or whatever art supplies you have. Get creative! Hang it on the refrigerator where everyone will see it.

Mission statement template

Pray Over Your Home

Psalm 91:1–2

Today you'll walk through your home together and pray over each room.

1Read it

A shelter is a safe place to stay. This psalm says God himself is a safe place for everyone who trusts him.

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’”Psalm 91:1–2

2Talk about it

  1. Where is a place that makes you feel safe?
  2. How is God like a shelter for our family?

3Do it

Walk room to room and pray.

Go to each room together. Read the verse out loud, then have a different person pray the short prayer each time. Check off each room when you finish.

Find Your Five Stones

1 Samuel 17

Today's story is David and Goliath. You'll need to step outside for a few minutes to find some rocks.

1Read it

The Philistine army had a giant named Goliath. Every day he dared someone from Israel's army to come fight him, and every soldier was afraid. Then David, a young shepherd, said he would go. God had protected him from a lion and a bear while he watched his sheep, and David trusted God to help him again.

“Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.”1 Samuel 17:40
“David said to the Philistine, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.’”1 Samuel 17:45

Have more time? Read the whole story together in 1 Samuel 17.

2Talk about it

  1. Why was David brave when everyone else was scared?
  2. What is something that feels like a giant to you right now?

3Do it

Go find five stones.

Head outside and find five rocks, just like David did. Bring them back and sit together. Pick up one stone at a time, read what it stands for, and answer the question.

  2. 2God has helped me before.David remembered the lion and the bear. When has God helped our family?

Seek the Lord With Your Whole Heart

Jeremiah 29:13

Today's challenge: everyone memorizes one verse before bedtime.

1Read it

God's people were living far from home. Through the prophet Jeremiah, God gave them a promise: if they looked for him with everything in them, they would find him.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”Jeremiah 29:13

2Talk about it

  1. What does it mean to seek God with your whole heart?
  2. What are some ways we can look for God during our day?

A Generational Blessing

Psalm 145:4

Today you'll call someone older who loves Jesus and hear how God has been faithful to them.

1Read it

A generation is a group of people born around the same time, like grandparents, parents, and kids. God wants each generation to tell the next one about the great things he has done.

“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.”Psalm 145:4

2Talk about it

  1. Who is someone older than us who loves Jesus and loves our family?
  2. Why does God want us to hear stories from people who have followed him for a long time?

3Do it

Call a grandparent or spiritual mentor.

Call or video chat a grandparent, or another older believer who has helped your family follow Jesus. Put the phone on speaker so everyone can hear. Let the kids ask the questions.

Conversation guide

Start the call:

“Hi! It's Seek Week at our church, and we want to hear how God has been faithful to you. Do you have a few minutes?”

Ask:

  1. How did you come to know Jesus?
  2. Can you tell us about a time God took care of you?
  3. What is a Bible verse that has helped you?
  4. What do you want our family to know about following God?

Then ask:

“Would you pray a blessing over our family?”

After the call: Have each person share one thing they want to remember.

Can't reach anyone today? Parents, tell your kids how you came to know Jesus and a time God was faithful to you. Then pray a blessing over them.

4Pray it

God, thank you for the people who showed us your love. Thank you for being faithful to them and to us. Help our family pass your love on to the generations after us. In Jesus' name, amen.
